Waste & Recycling
The goal of Council is to provide a clean and visibility presentable town.
Council provides a weekly garbage collection service in Nyngan and maintains the waste disposal depots in Nyngan and the three villages. Residents are reminded to place their garbage bins in the street with the arrow facing the street to ensure that the lid automatically closes when returned to the upright position after emptying. Additional items placed alongside will not be collected.
Business houses are urged to organise a system that will adequately meet their needs in relation to cardboard boxes. Residents are reminded not to place heavy objects or hot ashes in their mobile bins, as this will cause damage to them.
The commercial area of Nyngan is swept twice a week, with other areas of the town swept monthly.
Residents are reminded of the need to follow some basic requirements in order to assist in the improved management of the Nyngan Waste Depot:
- Drop only general waste at the ramp area.
- Leave metals, green waste, tyres and metals at the appropriate bays.
- No scavenging.
- No lighting of fires.
- Hold household chemicals in a safe place until Council makes arrangement for holding facilities.
- Cover all loads when transporting waste to avoid littering and spillage.
- Follow instruction given by signage.
- Those who have significant amounts of commercial or building waste (more than a single trailer load), should contact Council prior to disposal.
If you have enquiries regarding waste disposal please call Council on 6835 9000.
Recycling
Bogan Shire Council has implemented a fortnightly recycling service for the residents of Nyngan. The set up cost for council is $60,000 including the initial cost of purchasing and delivery of the new bins to each household, with a quarterly charge of $26.00 to be part of our rate notice and charges. The new recycling bin provided by Bogan Shire Council will belong to the property at which you currently live.
A new 240lt Blue bin with Yellow lid has been specially designed to accommodate the recyclables from Nyngan. The diverting of recyclable materials from landfill to Carlginda Enterprises at Gilgranda, is good for the environment and extends the life of our own landfill site which is good for the residents of Nyngan.
This is the first stage of our new waste management and recycling program and does not include businesses or rural residents at the moment. Businesses and rural residents should continue their current practices until notified by Bogan Shire Council.
Please do not hesitate to contact Bogan Shire Council if you have any questions about the bins or the recycling program.

Oil Recycling Facility
A used oil collection facility has been Located at Bogan Shire Council Waste Depot. Full used oil containers can be dropped off adjacent to the tank seven (7) days a week for decanting periodically.Used oil is potentially hazardous, toxic, carcingenic and harnful to the environment when irresponsibly discarded. It can also be poisonous if swallowed or inhaled and may present a fire hazard if not properly stored. Oil is also a non renewable resource that is technically and economically viable to recover. A significant quantity of so called 'missing oil' is not being recovered in the NetWaste regoin.
Without a proper facilities for safe disposal, oil can seep into the ground and contaminate soil, streams, rivers, lakes and drinking water. Used motor oil contains additives such as arsenic, lead and magnesium which when released into the environment are toxic. One litre of used oil can contaminate up to one million litres of water, which is about half the size of an Olympic swmming pool.
"This project was funded through a transitional Assistance Grant by the Product Stewardship for Oil Programme of the Department of the Environment and Water Resources"
